1887 - around 120 years before from now. There was a bungalow equipped with ten bedrooms near the beach which can command a whole view of the grand sea of the Singapore island.
This bungalow called "Beach house" was changed into "Raffles Hotel" by 4 entrepreneurial Armenian brothers, the Sarkies Brothers.
This name was connected with Mr. Thomas Stamford Raffles who was the founder of modern Singapore.
The reason why they adopted his name was to come true their dream in which travelers were provided with highest-class accommodations.

In the second half of the 19th century, the traveling-abroad boom was growing and many celebrities and VIPs came to visit the hotel from all over the world. The hotel received high evaluations with "the most wonderful institution east of Suez" from European countries. Mr. Somerset Maugham who was a famous writer extolled it as "Raffles stands for all the fables of the Exotic East."
